Joey’s Craft Soda Review: The Dad’s Root Beer – Bubble Up

February 26, 2015 By Craft Beverage Jobs Leave a Comment

CBJ Joey's Craft Soda Review

Its that time once again, the day we invite 15 year old Joey Godinez to take over the Craft Beverage Jobs blog for another of his Craft Soda Reviews!

If you follow the Craft Beverage Jobs blog then you know that as a rule, we do NOT do reviews. There are plenty of review blogs out there and they do a great job highlighting craft beverages. We stick to careers and industry news. However, there is always an exception to every rule and we are proud to have Joey as our exception! Enjoy!

Joey’s Craft Soda Review

I’m Joey. I like craft soda, a lot. In my opinion I feel that craft sodas have a lot more to offer than a mass produced soda not only in taste, but in variety and quality of ingredients used in their production. This is a big reason why I generally enjoy craft sodas, and I also think that drinking them and reviewing them is a great way to support the generally smaller companies that produce these beverages.

The History Of Bubble Up

This week, Joey will be reviewing Bubble Up, the lemon-lime, carbonated, craft soda produced by The Dad’s Root Beer company in Jasper, Indiana. Bubble Up predates the popular lemon lime  soda, 7-UP by ten years. This craft soda was even distributed by Coca-Cola prior to their lemon-lime version, Sprite.

A Kiss of Lemon, A Kiss of Lime.

Check out this Bubble Up commercial from 1980 featuring a VERY young David Caruso (NYPD Blue/CSI: Miami).

Joey’s Review Of Bubble Up

As much as I enjoy doing my reviews outside, sometimes it’s easier to just sit at the table, so that’s what I’m going with. I just finished my work, my favorite songs are up, and I’m ready to review.

The Look…

I generally don’t enjoy simple looking bottles, but this one is an exception. Maybe because it’s bright green, I reallyBubble Up Soda like it. Kinda neony, really cool. Reminds me of green Jello.

The Smell…

When I opened the bottle it let out a kind of hiss, which I hope means it’s really fizzy. It smells exactly like 7-Up, which in my mind smells a lot like Pine Sol, but maybe it’s just me. And for those that don’t know (which I kinda hope you wouldn’t) I really love the smell of Pine Sol.

The Fizz…

Of all the drinks I’ve reviewed, this one is definitely the fizziest one I’ve tried so far, maybe because it’s the first lemon lime soda that’s been reviewed. I think being uber fizz masters is a common element in most citrus sodas. Super refreshing in that aspect, definitely a summer drink.

The Taste…

It tastes like everything 7-Up wishes it was, but isn’t. Super crisp, super clean, and really refreshing. The lemon lime flavors don’t taste so overly weird and sweet like 7-Up, it’s still sweet, but in a good way. There’s a bit of bite as well, like if I were drinking a ginger ale or something. Like I said before, this is a great summer drink to unwind with after a long, hard day of sitting on the couch  binge watching movies.

Overall: Bubble Up is really good, everything about it is done well. It’s easily the best lemon lime soda I’ve ever tried, and that goes beyond Sprite and 7-Up. 9/10
