Craft Beer Culture: the sum of attitudes, customs, and beliefs about craft beer that distinguishes one group of people from another.
In 1989, the doors to Rogue’s Bayfront Brew Pub opened in Newport, Oregon, and a craft beer nation was born. Not only were they producing award winning craft beer but they were creating a craft beer culture that would define a generation.
Rogue’s philosophy for craft beverage is no secret, in fact, if you visit their website’s About page, they’re rather bold about it. They pride themselves in producing quality brews with a knack for innovation. This innovative drive isn’t a free-for-all, but is guided by a number of fundamental beliefs and rules to live by called “The Rogue Way”.
There is a defined culture to craft beer producers. A certain code to live and do business by. Certainly, as the industry grows, not everyone will follow suit, but those who do will set themselves apart as leaders, not followers. Rogue has been leader from day one.
Rogue Nation
Nation: A large group of people who act and think of themselves as one.
Want the full Rogue experience? Then you’d best become a citizen of Rogue Nation.
There are three steps to becoming a Rogue Nation citizen. First, you need to read the Rogue’s Declaration of Independence, which declares above all, independence from the status quo and an allegiance to all fellow-Rogue citizens. The list of affirmations within the declaration will probably remind you of your favorite craft brewery in your own neighborhood. Here are a few of my favorites:
- Take risks
- Respect for diversity
- Work hard
- Blaze your own trails
- Never satisfied to rest on past laurels
Second, you need to apply for citizenship. Yes, they take this seriously. Just a few basic steps and a photo ID and your all set.
Third, take the pledge.
Done? You’re now an official citizen of Rogue Nation. CONGRATULATIONS!
